Villa Oeiras Carcavelos 500ml
Carcavelos gained its international reputation in the 18th century under the leadership of Marques de Pombal, who produced the wine on his farm at Oeiras. Despite its historic acclaim, the wine nearly disappeared in the 20th century, a victim of heavy development along the coast west of Lisbon. Now only 25 hectares of the Carcavelos DOC remain, and only two wineries produce this fortified, oxidized wine. Villa Oeiras has been at the forefront of reviving Carcavelos, growing and vinifying the same historic white grapes from the Pombal estate, now a national landmark in Portugal.
Villa Oeiras's Carcavelos spends an average of 15 years in French and Portuguese oak barrels, resulting in a deep amber wine with complex notes of dried fruit, honey meal and spices. Its sweetness and concentration are balanced by its tangy acidity and long finish.
