This has the gamut of dark currant and blackberry compote flavors, with smoldering tobacco, tar and cedar notes and singed savory details. While dark and slightly rustic in profile, this has a good zip of fresh acidity through the finish. Shows solid range and character. Drink now through 2030.

The 2016 de France is medium to deep garnet-purple colored with black cherries, warm plums and cassis aromas with wafts of cigar box and crushed stones. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and juicy with plush tannins and a lively lift. Drink 2019-2029.

Château de France is owned by the Thomassin family and comprises 40ha of relatively old vines averaging over 30 years old, planted in deep gravel soils in Leognan. I love the smoky, coffee edge to this wine with grilled almond and vanilla bean, showing that the 40% new oak barrels are put to good use, well judged and not at all overdone. It delivers the richness that you expect from a Pessac, although it's a touch drying and abrupt on the finish where the coffee beans turn into coffee grounds. This can perhaps be corrected through ageing. From a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot. Drinking Window 2027 - 2050.

Barrel Sample. This is a big, bold wine, ripe with sweet tannins that balance the generous black currant fruitiness. The dense texture offers pleasant concentration, and the wine shows good aging potential.

There’s plenty of dark-berry character, such as blueberries and blackberries with hints of bark. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a soft and caressing finish. Better after 2022.
