In the world of wine, Picpoul could be a synonym for easy. Not simple, but effortless. Bonny Doon Vineyard understands the assignment, though they™ve put in some effort to get here. In 2020, they grafted Picpoul over Grenache vines at Sweetwater Vineyard, a cool-climate site in Monterey County, and made their first vintage in 2023. This 2024 wine, their second year with the variety, was hand-harvested, whole-cluster pressed, and fermented cold in stainless steel to preserve every bit of aromatic lift. Aromas of juicy pear and chunks of pineapple open things up, and on the palate, the pineapple takes on a richer, rounder dimension. A bright tang cuts through the midpalate, and the acidity"which is the real star of the show"carries a mineral, saline thread through a long, persistent finish. Incredibly easy to drink, unpretentious, quite pleasant. And for $18 dollars is a steal!
