Jean-Louis Chave Selection Cotes-du-Rhone Mon Coeur 2021
The Chave family is based in a small village on the northern right bank of the Rhone. There have been Chaves growing vines on the famous Hermitage hill since 1481. Gerard Chave took over from his father in 1970 and rapidly achieved megastar status due to the extraordinary quality of his wines and has since passed on the winemaking responsibilities to his son Jean-Louis. Their unmatched meticulousness continues through five centuries to render venerable expressions of the purest of Rhône terroir.
Jean-Louis makes these wines to showcase the potential of the appellations he works with. The Cotes du Rhone Mon Coeur is a blend of four distinct terroirs located in and around Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Though the blend varies year to year, it is roughly 50% Syrah and 50% Grenache. Vine age is between 20-60 years.

A year-in, year-out smoking value as well as a great bottle of wine, the 2021 Côtes du Rhône Mon Coeur checks in as equal parts Grenache and Syrah brought up in neutral oak. Its vivid ruby hue is followed by a medium-bodied, elegant, lively red offering pretty red and black berry fruits, some spring flowers, peppery herbs, and gamey nuances, fine tannins, and nicely integrated acidity. Coming from a cooler year, it still brings plenty of richness and depth and is well worth seeking out. |
