Locations ES Spanish Red by Dave Phinney
This wine opens with aromatic notes of tobacco, cigar box, and ripe plum, and leads to an opulent palate of dark berries, earth, hints of spice, and sweet tobacco with a lengthy, luscious finish.
Grape Composition: Grenache/Garnacha, Tempranillo, Monastrell, Carignan/Carineña
Dave Phinney's newest project "Locations," is independent from his previous ventures. Locations arose from the idea that there is great wine all over the world, which sometimes gets lost because the appellation rules are confusing and old fashioned. In similar fashion to his previous successes, Dave strives to make the best wine possible. Locations present us with well-crafted wines made from vineyards across their respective countries that demonstrate that a commitment to excellent fruit and gentle winemaking techniques can make a product that is just as good as any terroir-driven wine.
Release ES-7 now available.

If you judge wines on how they taste and the degree of pleasure they offer, they are all incredible efforts. The three new cuvees I tasted are among the finest wine values one could hope to find. Moreover, there are 50,000 cases of each, no easy feat given the grapes Phinney has accessed and the quality he has turned out. As of now, Dave Phinney might be my “value winemaker of the year” candidate. P.S. It’s too expensive for this report, but I am including it as an hommage to what Dave Phinney has achieved. If there are better wines for under $20 a bottle in the world today, please share that information with The Wine Advocate. |
