The 82nd Infantry Division was constituted on August 5th, 1917 at Fort Gordon, Georgia, and served with distinction on the Western Front during World War I. The distinctive "AA" on the unit patch represents the Division's nickname - "All Americans" and lends to it being the first Division in the US Army to consist of members from all 48 states.
During World War II, our military looked for soldiers capable of parachuting behind enemy lines, and on 15 August 1942, the Division was re-designated the 82nd Airborne Division, becoming the first Airborne Division of the US Army, and the legend was born.
The Division would conduct four combat jumps during World War II, solidifying the importance of Airborne Forces, and earning such admiration from General George Patton that he named the 82nd Airborne Division "America's Guard of Honor". Since World War II, the Division answered the Nation's call in the Dominican Republic, Vietnam, Grenada, Panama, Desert Storm, and numerous deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan during the Global War on Terrorism.
Today, our 82nd Airborne Division stands ready, as always, to be our Nation's 9-1-1 call. When our Nation needs a force capable to deploy anywhere in the world within 18 hours, they call the 82nd Airborne Division, and the call is answered. So, sleep tight America, The 82nd Airborne Division is on Guard. Ready to deploy and destroy our enemies. We are the United States' "Guard of Honor"!
