Château Doisy-Daëne, Second Cru Classé in 1855, located in Barsac in the Sauternes appellation, has been in the Dubourdieu family since 1924. For over eighty years three generations of vine growers have exercised talents to produce great sweet white wines: Georges (1924-1948), Pierre (1949-1999) and Denis since 2000.

Grape Composition: 93% Sémillon, 7% Sauvignon Blanc

Doisy Daëne wine has a style of its own that privileges a bursting fruit concentrated by the "noble rot", strength, balance and subtlety of the flavors. The Doisy-Daëne style is all at once the expression of a great calcareous soil and a truly aesthetic family tradition, the one of distinguished white wines, of crystal-like purity, combining power and freshness, in an infinite youth.

A racy and pure style, with a honeysuckle note leading off, followed quickly by white peach, pineapple and yellow apple fruit flavors mixed with acacia and orange blossom hints.

I love the ginger-spiced quality that is so evident in the sweet wines this year, a gorgeous addition that deepens the experience. This feels like a drop of luxury, and on a second tasting I covet the seams of minerality that are clearly evident. A rich style. Drinking Window 2022-2050.

Barrel sample. This wine has great freshness, shot through with acidity and a core of dry botrytis. The wine is rich while also structured. It will certainly be a wine to age.

The 2016 Doisy-Daëne is all subtlety and finesse. White flowers, mint, orchard fruit, lemon confit and a kiss of new French oak add to an impression of elegance. Beautifully layered and open-knit, the 2016 exudes class from start to finish. The mid-weight structure and sense of freshness are incredibly appealing. I can't think of too many other Sauternes I would rather reach for than Doisy-Daëne.

There's a wealth of rich, ripe apricots and sweetly fragrant peaches here, as well as a gently tropical eedge. The palate is fleshhy and richly sweet and offers smooth orange-marmalade flavors. Striking elegance and length here. A blend of semillon and sauvignon blanc. Drink or hold.

One of the top sweet wines I was able to taste for this report was the 2016 Château Doisy Daëne. It’s a powerhouse of a Barsac, boasting a light gold color as well as a huge, exotic perfume of buttered oranges, tropical fruits, lemon curd, and tropical fruits. Deep, full-bodied, thick and opulent on the palate, it stays relatively light on its feet and balanced. It’s a thrill a minute and doesn’t pull any punches, and I promise it will put a smile on your face. Drink it any time over the coming 20-25 years.
