Penfolds Max's Cabernet Sauvignon 2018
Bright crimson with medium plum core. All the hallmarks of classic Cabernet Sauvignon are present and accounted for. First impressions are reminiscent of a stroll through the garden. Earthy, leafy notes prevail with dried native mint adding a lovely herbal note. Further investigation reveals cocoa powder, red currants and blood orange. Underlying cedar notes and cherry wood add further oak derived intrigue. An abundance of delightful primary fruit characters with blueberries, strawberries and pomegranates competing for attention. French and American oak maturation characters add a pleasing creaminess and weight to the palate with a distinctive hazelnut signature. Firm tannins with length and drive are supported by a seam of refreshing acidity.

Espresso, anise, and plum form a remarkable alliance on the nose and palate before opening up to reveal wildflowers planted among sage and mint. Dried fruits and Italian herbs underscored by cedar make for a structured red aged 12 months in French and American oak. The bottle displays the Penfolds “stamp” inspired by the winery’s legendary former winemaker Max Schubert. |
