Clos du Clocher 2016

The 2016 Clos du Clocher is medium to deep garnet-purple colored and very earthy on the nose with cigar box, forest floor, truffles and charcoal aromas with black cherries and baked red and black plums. Elegantly styled, the palate is medium-bodied with perfumed fruit, a fine-grained frame and a long refreshing finish. |

A lovely vibrant purple, the Cabernet Franc really comes through very strongly, with an impression of tight cassis, blackberry leaf, tobacco, curling woodsmoke and violet. Beautifully precise and focussed, I love the fresh seam running through it. |

Barrel Sample. The tannins here are almost southern in their dusty character, structured and dense, yet at the same time the wine is ripe and fruity. It will be an impressive wine. |

The 2016 Clos du Clocher is gorgeous. Blackberry jam, chocolate, new leather and licorice add to the wine's racy, plush feel. Even with all of its textural richness, the 2016 retains terrific energy. The new oak needs time to fully integrate, but that is not enough to keep the 2016 from being hugely appealing in the early going. The 2016 has been impressive on the three occasions I have tasted it so far. |

The blackberry and dark-plum aromas are very prevalent here. Undertones of lemon rind and hot stones. Medium-to full-bodied, firm and chewy. Linear and focused with a fine line of tannins and acidity running through the center palate. Shows class. A blend of 75 per cent merlot and 25 per cent cabernet franc. Drink in 2022. |
