Borgo Paglianetto Verdicchio di Matelica Petrara 2020
Verdicchio's "Petrara," a white wine of distinction from Borgo Paglianetto, named for an old city, beckons with its cerebral character and pleasure. A value among the world's best whites, it's made from organic Verdicchio from one vineyard in calcareous clay soil with a south-facing aspect for optimal ripening. Aged six months in stainless steel, its 6,000-bottle production is a special treat. Fresh and tangy with notes of green apples and citrus, light-bodied and elegant, it ends with almonds and pure pear and apple flavors plus a stony minerality. A perfect partner to seafood dishes like sushi, crudo, poached fish, and risotto, it's also a standout with vegetable dishes. Borgo Paglianetto's 25-hectare estate on the Matelica hills, with its unusual north-south orientation, creates a microclimate ideal for producing top organic grapes

Dusty yellow florals mix with nuances of sweet spice, crushed apples and pears as the remarkably pretty 2020 Verdicchio di Matelica Petrara slowly comes to life in the glass. It’s lifted and delicate in feel with zesty green citrus and brisk acidity that creates a reverberation of tension toward the close. Depths of salty minerality blended with sour melon lingers incredibly long through the almost-teeth-chattering finale. The 2020 Petrara is gorgeous, but it will require a short stay in your cellar to show its best.
